Nanning Overview

Nanning is the capital city of Guangxi region and acts as the core of the Guangxi Pan Beibu Gulf Economic Zone. Nanning plays an important role in China’s globalisation initiatives, and it a key node for the “Belt and Road Initiative” (BRI), which is often mentioned as the new Silk Road for the 21st century that was announced in 2013. Nanning has a population of about 8 million by end of 2018 and is the economic, financial and cultural hub of Guangxi.

Languages commonly used in Nanning is Mandarin Chinese (Putonghua). Other languages include Cantonese and other minority languages.

Guangxi occupies an area of about 236,700 square kilometres. This region is one of the most picturesque region in China. Its rivers, valleys, and stone peaks create a fairy-tale scenery that has attracted many tourists to this place yearly. This region climate is subtropical with cold winters and hot, humid summers.

Guangxi uniquely faces south to the ASEAN region. China is ASEAN’s largest trading partner, amounting to 17.2% of the group total trade in 2017.  The strategic importance of ASEAN can be witnessed also through the numerous ministerial meetings and key events held here such as the CHINA-ASEAN Exposition (CAEXPO), Pan-Beibu Gulf Economic Cooperation Forum, CABIS etc.

Guangxi has a population of more than 46 million.  More than 30 ethnic minority groups have been living amicably for a long time ethnic composition include the Bai, Dai, Dong, Han, Miao, Yi, Zhuang and others. While the Han take up about 62%, the Zhuang comprise about 32% of GuangXi’s which makes it the largest minority group. As such, Guangxi officially became the Zhuang Autonomous Region in 1958.

Over the years, the Zhuang are assimilated into the Han Chinese culture, though we still see their prominent culture display through its music and dance traditions. All in all, the various groups’ history and ethnic cultures add colour and appeal to the city.

Nanning Wuxu International Airport is 32km southwest of the city. The IATA Code is NNG. By car it will takes about 40-50 minutes’ driving from the city centre to the airport. Airport shuttle buses are available from the airport to the Nanning city center at Chaoyang Square.

There are direct daily flights from Wuxu International Airport to major domestic China cities which includes to Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Chengdu and Shenzhen.

 The international flights comes from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Djakarta, Ho Chi Minh, Phnom Penh, Rangoon, Vientiane, Seoul, Phuket and Cheju. Domestic carriers include Sichuan Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, Beibu Gulf Air, and others.

Clearing customs and immigration in Nanning is relatively quick and efficient. Other than local residents and foreigners clearing lines, we have the Diplomatic and Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Business Travel Card lines. The APEC card enables holders to fast track immigration processing and is useful to have.

Nanning Railway Station and Nanning East Railway Station are the two train stations.  Nanning Railway Station mainly has normal speed trains, while Nanning East Railway Station focuses on high speed trains’ operation. Nanning Railway Station is at the centre of the city (north end of Chaoyang Lu) and offers frequent services to popular tourist locations like Guilin and the rest of China.

High-speed rail, with Nanning as its hub, connects GuangXi to other close by provinces including Guangdong, Guizhou, Hunan and Yunnan and to major cities like Shanghai and Beijing. This comprehensive network of rail lines linking near and distant provinces is a preferred choice for most travellers.

Train tickets can be purchased at the train station where proper queues are followed. Typically, visitors either choose the ‘hard seats’ (yingzuo) or soft seats (ruanzuo) which are more comfortable and common for short day train rides.

Train types are identified by the alphabet followed by the route number. We have C (stands for Chengji), G (stands for Gaotie) and D (stands for Dongche) for high speed rails and these rails travels at speeds from 350 km to 200 km per hour.  The other train types are Z (stands for Zhida) for nonstop and others like T (stands for Tekuai), K (Kuaiche), L (Linshi lieche) and S (stands for Shijiao).

Generally, there are 3 types of seats to choose from – Second Class Seat, First Class Seat and Business Class Seat.

Second Class Seat is the standard type and the cheapest onboard. First Class Seats, on the other hand, are more expensive with larger seat size and more personal space for your arms and legs.

Business seats - Bullet train

Business Class Seats are like the first-class on the airplane. They are most expensive and luxurious to give passengers the most comfortable travel. Usually, there are 5 Business Class Seats in the one carriage.​

Regardless which type of seats you have chosen, you can be assured that the trains are CLEAN, SAFE and COMFORTABLE. They follow a strict train schedule.  Visitors are recommended to be at the departing train gate at least 15mins before departure time. Also have you passports handy as checks will be made on the name on your ticket with the name on your passport.  Keep your train ticket as this is needed for exit at your destination train station.

Long Distance Bus Transport to Nanning

Nanning has five main bus stations – Langdong Bus Station, Jiangnan Bus Station, Anji Bus Station, Xixiangtang Bus Station and Jinqiao Bus Station.  The buses provides transportation to various locations and counties within the province. Also, long-distance buses are available for travel to major cities in China, such as Beijing, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Chengdu and Guilin.

This city plans to build 8 metro lines covering 184 stations.  The metro network will total about 252 km in mileage.   As of 2019,  there are 3 completed lines – Nanning metro line 1,  line 2 & line 3 are in service.

Metro line 1 (Shibu – East Railway Station) is the east-west line, connects Shibu and Nanning East Railway Station, passing through 25 stations. It began operation in June 2016.

Metro Line 2 (Xijin – Yudong) is the north-south line opened in December 2017 linked Xijin and Yudong, passes through Anji Bus Station, Nanning Railway Station, Chaoyang Square.

Metro Line 3 (Keyuan Avenue – Pingliang Flyover) is also north-south line, transports between Keyuan Avenue and Pingliang Flyover. It started operation in June 2019.

Metro Line 4 (South Railway Station – Yongning) estimated operational date is in 2020.

Metro Line 5: Santang – Nahong are under construction and to be constructed.

Line 6: Shibu South – Liulü are under construction and to be constructed.

Metro Line 7: Yongjin – Liucun  are under construction and to be constructed.

Metro Line 8: Najing – Nalian  are under construction and to be constructed.

The rapid opening of metro lines is a testament to the accelerated socio-economic development and improvement of the public transportation in Nanning.

Every metro station has a security checkpoint for safety reasons with security staff.

To ensure public safety and security, all travellers are expected to put their bags and luggages through an X-ray electronic security scanner.

If you carry liquid bottle, you need to drink the liquid to show that it is not flammable before you are allowed to enter.

Any passengers refusing to undergo security check will not be allowed on the subway. Those who behave violently against security staff are subjected to face criminal detention and punishment.

Metro Ticket Fare Prices: Children below 1.3 meters enjoy free rides. There is a 10% discount for Nanning Transportation Card holders.

Normal ticket prices vary by the distance: ¥2 for the first 6 kilometres (km); ¥3 for 6-12 km;  ¥4 for 12-18 km, ¥5 for 18-26 km; ¥6 for 26-34 km; ¥1 for each additional 10 km over 34 km.

 

Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) - City Bus

Nanning has a full complement of public buses – the regular bus service, and the BRT or Bus Rapid Transit. Bus and BRT tickets are 2 yuan each. City buses operates mainly from 06:15 to 23:00 hours. For non-conditioned buses, the ticket price is typically 1 yuan whereas for air-conditioned buses is 2 yuan. Some special bus routes charges 3 or 5 yuan. Shuttle buses are available from the airport to the Nanning city center at Chaoyang Square.

Taxi & Didi

Taxis are conveniently found in the city.  The day time taximeter fare starts at CNY 9 for the first 2 kilometres and then CNY 2 for each extra 1 kilometre. Taxi to or from the Airport costs about CNY 120 one way. 

You could wave your hand at the side of the road to get a taxi.

When is best time to visit Nanning City

Nanning has a subtropical climate with hot and humid summers from May to August, the months of October and November are cooler follow by  mild winters from January to March.

This is highlighted by adequate daylight and precipitation all the year around. The mean yearly temperature is about 27.7C (81.8F), with the temperatures of 28C (82F) and 12.8C (55F) to be its most elevated and least separately. By ideals of this mellow atmosphere of Nanning, the trees of the city are green all year, thus its name ‘Green City’. The precipitation here midpoints 1,300 millimeters every year, even in the sweltering summer, the precipitation is very adequate.
